How to Stay Active as we Age

As we get older, it’s harder to stay active and exercise. Our bodies have less energy and, sometimes, we feel pain when we move. South Coast Post Acute wants to remind you that staying active is one of the keys to a happier and healthier life. We try to give our patients the best lifestyle post-hospital care. Here are five different ways to stay active and move around without exerting too much effort.

Swimming. This is an especially beneficial activity for you that is easy on the joints while still using all of the large muscle groups. Swimming even increases bone density which reduces your risk of osteoporosis.

Gardening. Get outside and enjoy the beautiful weather. Gardens are easy to maintain and don’t require a lot of effort. Growing your own herbs, fruits and vegetables can help assure you’re eating a nutritious diet.

Attend or volunteer at local events. Get involved in your community, discover new things and meet new people. Maintain your health by doing enjoyable, but also meaningful, activities. You can take a look at libraries, schools, community centers or non-profits in your neighborhood.

Start or pursue a hobby. It’s never too late to start a new hobby. Choose something that motivates and inspires you. Perhaps that’s painting, cooking, fishing or going on walks.

Yoga. These exercises are gentle on the joints, promote a range of motion and improve your balance. Some classes may even meet outside on nice days.
