Differences Between Post-Acute Care and Skilled Nursing Care

Physical Therapy Techniques

Physical therapy is important in post-acute care, and there are many different things you can do to strengthen your body. We at South Coast Post Acute in Santa Ana want you to have a happy and healthy journey to recovery, and our skilled nurses try to give our patients the best lifestyle post-hospital care.

Here are three physical therapy treatments that will help enhance your recovery:

Applying heat or ice. Heat helps increase circulation to injured tissues and provide pain relief by relaxing the muscles. Use hot packs or moist, hot cloths for 15 to 20 minutes. On the other hand, cold packs or ice can help decrease pain and reduce inflammation. Ice is normally used in the initial phase of an injury.

Massage. This form of manual physical therapy involves kneading the parts of your injury with your hands. Massaging helps decrease pain and muscle tension and improve circulation. Click here for different massage techniques you can try.

Whirlpools. Whirlpools are a form of hot or cold hydrotherapy that improve circulation, control inflammation and maintain clean wounds. The motors of whirlpools move the water around the affected body part, making for a relaxing form of therapy. Be sure the water is not too hot or too cold, because extreme temperatures can cause skin damage. A hot whirlpool is typically between 98 and 110 degrees Fahrenheit, and a cold whirlpool is typically 50 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit.
