Memory Care: How Food Impacts the Mind

Our diets have a big impact on multiple aspects of our lives. The diet we maintain and what we consume affects our physical health and appearance. But as several studies have shown, food also has long-term effects on our mental health.

A bad diet can increase the chances of individuals suffering from diseases such as dementia and Alzheimer’s. An unhealthy diet can also affect your body with diseases such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

Although they can negatively impact your brain functions and state of mind, there are also many that bring lots of benefits to your overall health. These foods can reduce the risk of such diseases occurring as you age.

Unhealthy Brain Foods

These are some of the worst foods you can consume for your brain according to Healthline.

Sugary Drinks – Beverages such as energy drinks, sport drinks, sodas, and fruit juice can all increase your chances of developing type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, and dementia due to their inclusion of high-fructose corn syrup.

Refined Carbs – These carbs include sugar and white flour, which is a type of highly processed grain. The carbs have a high glycemic index (GI) and can cause high sugar and insulin levels, impairing your brain functions.

Industrially Produced Trans Fat – These trans-fats are different from natural trans-fats that occur in meat and dairy. These fats, also known as “hydrogenated vegetable oils” are found in shortening, margarine, frosting, snack foods, ready-made cakes, and prepackaged cookies. These artificial trans-fats lead to poor memory and the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

Highly Processed Foods – Foods like chips, sweets, instant dinners, and certain cheese are all highly processed. Additionally, processed meats like bacon, smoked turkey, and ham can increase the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

Alcohol – Drinking alcohol excessively can lead to memory loss, especially in teenagers as their brains are still developing.

White Foods – Foods such as pasta, white sugar, white rice, and white bread can spike insulin levels damaging the brain.
