South Coast Post-Acute Named Among Best Nursing Homes in the U.S. According to Newsweek

South Coast Post-Acute was named among the best nursing homes in the United States according to a recent Newsweek ranking.

Partnered with Statista, a respected global data research firm, Newsweek created a ranking highlighting the best nursing homes in the nation. The rankings included the top 400 nursing facilities in the 20 states with the largest populations. The facilities were ranked in three separate categories: performance, peer recommendations, and the handling of the COVID-19 crisis.

Criteria

Out of the 20 states included, 10,647 nursing homes were considered for the rankings. But only 822 facilities were able to meet the criteria set forth by Newsweek. The criteria included:

  • Having a capacity of at least 150 certified beds
  • Achieving a certain threshold score, which was calculated using performance data
  • Meeting certain selection criteria based on their reported COVID-19 data

Nursing homes selected were single branches only, no nursing home groups or chains were selected. Additionally, facilities included in the Special Focus Facility (SFF) program did not take part in the rankings either.

Rankings

The rankings consisted of scores from three separate categories. With each category made up of an additional 3 benchmarks.

Performance Score

Staffing (40%) Quality Measures (36%) Inspections (24%)

The performance data comes from the monthly reports provided by the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). This data tracks three different categories consisting of health inspection scores, number of staff, and quality measures.

Statista proceeded to score each facility on a scale of 1 – 10. Only facilities averaging a score of 5/10 over all three measures were considered for an award.

Reputation Score

Recommendations (60%) Quality (20%) COVID-19 (20%)

The reputation score was taken from an online survey conducted by Statista with the cooperation of Newsweek. Around 12,500 medical experts were invited to take the survey. Participants scored and ranked nursing homes in their state by the quality of care, staff training level, on-duty personnel available, handling of COVID-19, accommodations, and services. Self-recommendation in any of the categories was not possible.

COVID-19 Score

Medical Supplies & Staffing (50%) COVID-19 Deaths (30%) COVID-19 Cases (20%)

Only nursing homes with less than 30% of cases per 1,000 residents and less than 20% of deaths per 1,000 residents were included in the rankings. Nursing homes with the least amount of cases and deaths received the highest scores. Staff shortages and medical supplies amounts were also taken into account for this category.
