For more than 40 years, our healthcare professionals have helped patients recover and return home safely. One of our many rehabilitative services includes occupational therapy, which is learning to perform everyday activities after recovering from a physical or mental illness. Some of these activities are eating, bathing, dressing and other self-care activities. There are also less obvious benefits. For example, patients learn to respond to information coming through the senses and communicate with others. We want to improve our patients’ ability to function in everyday life as quickly as possible. Patients and families should understand that therapy needs continue until the patient attains the skills necessary to return home. The therapy is individualized based on the disability, how quickly the patient learns, and goals of the family. Once skills are mastered in one area, therapy will focus on skills needed to be functional within the community.
